Jesús Oliver

Jesús Oliver is a professor of mathematics at California State University East Bay, where he works to improve student success and equity in undergraduate mathematics. His work focuses on building community, infusing active learning in the classroom, and developing departmental systems that support students and instructors. He has helped lead initiatives that increased student success in gateway mathematics courses through collaborative faculty development and course redesign. Born and raised in Venezuela and having also lived in Mexico City, Dr. Oliver is a first-generation college graduate, an English as a Second Language learner, and a first-generation Latino immigrant. He received the 2022 MAA Golden Section Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. His disciplinary research is in nonlinear wave equations and mathematical general relativity. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his children and learning about mathematical physics.
