While math instruction happens in classrooms, state policies can help create conditions that maximize learning and ensure alignment across educational sectors. Whether it’s the math requirements for high school graduation, the math courses accepted for college admissions, or the opportunities students have to take advanced math courses, such policies influence educational outcomes. Automatic enrollment, in which students who meet certain performance benchmarks are automatically placed into advanced math courses, is one example of a policy that seeks to remove bias from high school math placement. In this closing keynote session, state education leaders discussed policy approaches to enhancing math equity and opportunity.
