Math as a Vehicle for Democracy

Redistricting. Ranked choice voting. Determining a state’s eligible voting age population. These processes all influence our ability to effectively participate in our democracy. Understanding each of these practices requires a strong grounding in mathematical principles—ranging from statistics to percentages to graphing. With many feeling overwhelmed by the current political climate, and unsure of how they can civically engage in the present moment, this dialogue highlighted how essential it is that all students have the opportunity to hone their quantitative skills so that they can proactively take part in the democratic process.
