Shifting the Paradigm: Reframing Math for the Collective Good

Mathematics is key to understanding, critiquing, and improving the world around us—whether in public health, criminal justice, education, or immigration. But the role of math in reinforcing bias and inequity is a systemic challenge, as misuses of statistics, models, and algorithms can divide us and even threaten our well-being. A vibrant civil society requires a common grounding in mathematical reasoning as well as data that accurately reflect on-the-ground realities. In this dialogue, leaders with diverse perspectives envision new approaches to teaching and utilizing mathematics—approaches that enable marginalized groups to reclaim and reframe mathematical tools to prioritize the collective good.
